Jewish Rome

Let’s explore together one of the most authentic Roman districts: the Jewish Ghetto! as Rome, the capital of Catholic Italy, is  home to the oldest Jewish community of Europe.

The first Jews arrived as messengers sent by Judah Maccabee in the II century B.C.E. to conclude a treaty of alliance and later as prisoners sold into slavery after Titus destruction of Jerusalem.

With the Counter -Reformation a new epoch of discrimination began,  in July 1555 the Pope Paul IV established the Ghetto,  the community of approx 3000 Jews was confined there in segregation, living in great poverty and promiscuity,  cramped  in unhealthy hovels exposed to continuous flooding of the Tiber.

The Ghetto was their forced home for more than 300 years but despite the discrimination they managed to survive, to practice their religion and to preserve their distinct Roman Jewish culture.

You will learn more of the city’s rich Jewish history while taking a picture of the charming fountain of the Turtles or  walking along Via del Portico d’Ottavia, a monumental Roman gateway or admiring the Theatre of Marcellus.

You will enjoy the lively alleys lined with Kosher restaurants,  trendy stores , shops of locally produced Judaica (religious items) and attractive art galleries, no doubt the Ghetto is one of the most  intriguing areas of Rome.

We finally visit  the Jewish Museum and the great Synagogue to gain an in-depth and comprehensive insight of the rich Roman Jewish traditions.

We shall end our tour crossing the river, to spend a few minutes on the charming and picturesque Tiberine Island, standing on the oldest Roman bridge over the flowing Tiber, Rome will reveal once more all her magic!
