For the British poet Shelley ‘the fountains alone justify a visit to Rome’, with this tour we discover the special liaison between the city and water while exploring the area of the ancient Field of Mars, the lively, beating heart of Rome!
In the 6th C. AD the Goths cut all water supplies from the Roman aqueducts. During the Renaissance the popes started to renew and beautify the city by promoting the construction of new palaces, bridges and above all the restoration of the ancient aqueducts for public fountains.
Adequate supplies of water was crucial to the well being of the community. Fountains served the dual purpose of public usefulness and princely display!
A sculptor was required, capable of exploiting the potential of fountains as an artistic form and that genius was, of course, Gianlorenzo Bernini!
We start with his Barcaccia at the bottom of the Spanish Steps, then through the streets of the best shopping district in Rome, we follow the course of the ancient Aqueduct of the Virgin to reach the theatrical Trevi Fountain. A grandiose, baroque fantasy of gods and goddesses set by a rushing cascade of water. We throw our three coins in and make our wish to return to Rome!
From here we walk to the monumental Piazza Colonna and beyond through the most fascinating district of Rome, to reach the Pantheon, one of the most magnificent architectural monuments of antiquity, we stop to visit this “temple of all the gods” described by Michelangelo as ”angelic, not human”.
We then move on to Piazza Navona with Bernini’s greatest achievement: the fountain of the Four Rivers, symbolizing the triumph of the papacy and the re-awakening of Rome!
Here in the most picturesque square of Rome we end our walking tour, sampling one of the best ice creams in town!
