When making your choice be careful of what you really get, some of the refined websites offer tours led by native English-speakers who qualify themselves as experts, connoisseurs, docents,  young scholars, insiders and long time residents of the city…. If they do not specify they are licensed Tour Guides, then they are not! 
 

 Tour Guides in Italy are considered professionals and must be licensed under the Italian law to perform their services.
 

Our tour guide licence is an assurance of quality for you and a protection.

We earn our license via official exams given by the Provincia di Roma (County of Rome), the exams are given periodically and all Rome residents, Italians and foreigners with an advanced, qualifying education can take the exam.
 

To pass the close examination we  study in depth history, art, mythology, archaeology, architecture, geography, culture of Rome and foreign languages.
 

Once  passed the difficult test, before getting our license the Italian Police checks our records.

Licensed Tour Guides always proudly wear their license-badge (with their name and picture)  to be shown upon request to authorities, police officers conduct random checks and unlicensed guides can be stopped and fined, the tour stops as  they are breaking the law.
 

With other big tour companies selling on line you are going to be part of a large, noisy group of 40 people and pay as much as a private tour.
 

All these tours run on a very tight schedule, mass tourism means no time to stop, no time to take a picture, no possibility to ask questions or to find out more about what interests you.
